History
It all started one afternoon in late 2004. Several of the irregular disc golfers were chatting after a round at Tom Brown Park in Tallahassee, FL. Someone had expressed their gratitude regarding the beauty of the day, and how lucky we were that the Tallahassee Parks and Rec Dept. saw fit to have the disc golf course installed a few years before.
"There's got to be something we can do to give back to the community"
Now, I have no idea who made that statement that day, but it started the ball disc rolling right then and there.
As part of the local Seven Hills Hurlers disc golf club, many of us had participated in park and course cleanup days, and other tournaments that benefitted local organizations to some degree. We needed something more. Craig, ever the sage old guy willing to throw a wrench into a group just to get conversation started, mentioned the Ice Bowl.
The Ice Bowl series was started in 1987, with a single event in Columbia, Missouri, by IB Instigator Rick Rothstein. Initially begun to ward off the boredom of winter, the series added a charity component in later years, traditionally food banks. It has since evolved into a world-wide event, with an 8 week window in January/February every year for tournaments to occur. Since it's inception, the Ice Bowl as a whole has collected over $1,111,000 (over $250,000 in 2008) and ??? (over 52,000 lbs in 2008).
