Tallahassee is running it's second annual Ice Bowl tournament on
February 11th, 2006 at 9am. Started in 1987 in Columbia, Missouri, the
Ice Bowl originated as an impetus for the sport of disc golf during the
harsh northern winter months. Every year since then, more and more Ice
Bowl tournaments are popping up worldwide. In 2005 there were 183
reported events with a total of 7,028 players.
Since 1996, fundraising for local charities
(particularly food banks) has become a fundamental part of the annual
Ice Bowl tournaments. During Ice Bowl 2005, over $128,000 in funds and
17,489 lbs of food were donated to charities around the world in the
name of disc golf. This year, the goal is to raise over $140,000 for
charity.
In 2005, a total of 44 disc golfers raised $1,633 and 306 lbs of food for the First Annual Tallahassee Ice Bowl, putting us in 17th place worldwide.
The official Ice Bowl corridor for the 2006 tournaments
is January 8 to February 21. We've slated the Second Annual Tallahassee
Ice Bowl to be held on February 11th at Tom Brown Park in Tallahassee,
FL.
Our selected charity is America's Second Harvest of the Big Bend.
